Riddles ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Food An old man was walking to the nearest town to buy groceries, when he encountered two young boys. One boy had three small sacks of food and the other boy had five small sacks of food. (The value was the same for each sack of food). The old man saw his opportunity to avoid a round trip to town for food and asked the boys if they would sell him some food. The three decided to divide all the food equally by value amongst themselves. The old man gave the boys sixteen dollars and started home. How should the boys divide this money? Solution: The boy who had five sacks of food should get fourteen dollars and the boy who had three sacks of food should get two dollars. Each person ended up with 2 and 2/3 sack of food. The boy who started out with three sacks, gave up only 1/3 of a sack of food, where as the boy who started with five sacks gave up 2 and 1/3. Since the boys gave up a total of 2 and 2/3 sacks (or 8/3 ) the value of each 1/3 sack given up was $2.00. Since one boy gave 1/3 a sack, he should be given the $2.00 and the boy who gave 2 and 1/3 (7/3) sacks should get the remaining $14.00. |
